Help & troubleshooting

Need a hand?

The most common question is “why didn’t I get my reminder?” — and it’s almost always a quick iPhone setting. Start with the first answer below.

Notifications & reminders

Most reminder problems come down to a single iPhone setting. Start here.

I'm not getting my medication reminders. What's wrong?+
Almost always it's one of a few things — run through these in order; the first one fixes most cases: 1. Check notifications are allowed. Open Kapshul → Settings → Permissions. "Notifications" should say Allowed. If it doesn't, tap the switch and allow them. (This is the #1 cause — especially right after reinstalling or restoring from a backup.) 2. Check Focus / Do Not Disturb. If your iPhone is in a Focus mode (including Sleep or Driving), it can silence reminders. Turn on Critical Alerts for important medications so they come through anyway. 3. Check the volume and ring switch. A silent ringer or low volume means you'll see the reminder but not hear it. Critical Alerts ignore this; regular reminders don't. 4. Keep Background App Refresh on. iOS Settings → Kapshul → Background App Refresh. Kapshul uses this to keep your upcoming reminders queued. 5. Open Kapshul every day or two. Opening the app tops up the reminder schedule. If your phone's been off or untouched for a long stretch, a quick open gets things back on track. Still nothing? Fully restart your iPhone, then add a test medication a couple of minutes out to confirm.

What are Critical Alerts, and should I turn them on?+
Critical Alerts are the strongest reminder iOS allows — they break through Do Not Disturb, Focus modes, the mute switch, and a low volume, and play a sound even when your phone is silenced. Kapshul turns them on by default for prescription medications because missing those matters most, and you can switch them on or off per medication. The first time, iOS asks your permission to send them. If you said no earlier, you can re-enable it in Settings → Permissions.

How do I let Kapshul through a Focus mode or Do Not Disturb?+
A Focus mode — including Do Not Disturb, Sleep, or Driving — can silence reminders. There are two ways to make sure Kapshul still gets through: The simplest fix is Critical Alerts. Turn them on for the medications that matter most (Kapshul → Settings → Permissions, or per medication) and they break through every Focus mode automatically — no Focus setup needed. If you'd rather not use Critical Alerts, add Kapshul to a Focus's allowed apps: 1. Open iPhone Settings → Focus. 2. Tap the Focus you use (for example, Do Not Disturb). 3. Under Allow Notifications, open "Allow Notifications From" and add Kapshul. Keep Time-Sensitive Notifications switched on so reminders come through right away. Repeat for each Focus you use. For medications you truly can't miss, Critical Alerts are still the most reliable option.

I see the reminder on my screen but it doesn't make a sound.+
That's a sound setting, not a Kapshul problem. Check the ring/silent switch on the side of your phone, the volume, and whether a Focus mode is muting alerts. For medications you can't afford to miss, turn on Critical Alerts for that medication — they play a sound regardless.
My reminders stopped after I reinstalled the app, got a new phone, or restored a backup.+
When Kapshul is reinstalled or restored, iOS often resets the notification permission. Open Kapshul → Settings → Permissions and make sure "Notifications" says Allowed. Your medications and history come back from your iCloud backup, but the phone may need permission granted again.
What is "Keep Pestering"?+
For the doses where missing one really matters, you can turn on Keep Pestering for that medication. If you don't take or skip the dose, Kapshul nudges you again every few minutes (roughly every 3–10 minutes) until you respond. It's off by default — switch it on only for the medications that earn it. You'll find it on a medication's Alerts settings, along with the before/on-time/late reminder options.

Do reminders work if my phone is off, dead, or has no internet?+
Reminders are scheduled on your iPhone itself, so they don't need internet — they'll fire even in airplane mode. But if your phone is fully powered off, iOS can't show anything until it's back on; you'll see the reminder when it powers up. Reminders also stay on the iPhone where you set them up.
Why did a reminder come late?+
A few things can delay one: Low Power Mode (it pauses background activity), a Focus mode briefly holding alerts, or the phone being asleep for a long time. Keeping Background App Refresh on and opening the app occasionally keeps timing tight. For time-critical medications, Critical Alerts deliver most reliably.
Can I pause reminders without deleting a medication?+
Yes — set the medication to "as needed," or adjust its schedule, and it won't send scheduled reminders. Your history stays intact.
If I take a dose from the widget or a reminder, does it stop nagging me?+
Yes. Once a dose is marked taken or skipped, Kapshul cancels that dose's remaining reminders — including any Keep Pestering nudges — so you're not bothered about something you've already handled.

Getting started & everyday use

How do I add a medication?+
Tap the + on your medications screen. Search the built-in database of 5,000+ medications by brand or generic name, or add one manually. Kapshul walks you through the dose, the form, and how often you take it.
Kapshul suggested a schedule — can I change it?+
Yes. Kapshul suggests a sensible frequency based on the medication, but every step is editable. Tap "Custom" on the frequency screen for anything unusual — specific days, every few hours, every few weeks, or one-off dates.
What do the colours / traffic lights mean?+
Each dose shows its status at a glance — upcoming, due now, running late, or done — so you can see where you stand without opening anything.
Where do I see whether I've been taking my meds?+
The Trends & History view shows your adherence by week and month — handy for your own awareness or to show a doctor.
How do refill reminders work?+
Tell Kapshul how many days of supply you have and how far ahead you want a heads-up, and it'll remind you to pick up a refill and to ask your doctor for a renewal. It's optional — skip it if you don't need it.
